Synopsis
Misanthropic novelist François writes gripping crime stories â âAgatha Christie meets The Scarlet Pimpernelâ â but outside of the swashbuckling imaginary world of his Marquis la Rose-novels, life is far from thrilling. His partner Colette, a professor at the Sorbonne and world-renowned expert on Alfred Hitchcock, is tired of watching François sit around their apartment in his pyjamas and yearns for the excitement of the classic films she watches with her students. When Colette begins to suspect their flamboyant actor neighbour of murdering his wife, the coupleâs mundane lives are turned upside down â and their stale relationship is jolted back to life.

Then she decides the flamboyant actor down the hall has murdered his wife, and the apartment building turns into the plot neither of them could write. The film plays this as a cosy, talky mystery-comedy, more interested in a couple rediscovering each other than in forensic detail.
Best suited to viewers who love the amateur-sleuth tradition and do not mind a mystery that ambles before it accelerates. The register is arch and literate, full of nods to the genre these two have spent their lives studying, and the pleasure lies in watching stale routine get shaken loose by suspicion. If your ideal evening involves a clever couple, a suspicious neighbour, and dialogue sharper than the danger, settle in.
