Synopsis

When penniless con-artist Marge Bouvier is sent to Italy to convince wealthy sap Seymour Skinner to come home, she’s tempted by the trappings of his affluent lifestyle. But there’s a big fat fly in the ointment: Skinner’s clingy, dim-witted mooch of a houseguest, Homer Simpsley. Lies, lust and Italian lira are abound.

Our Review Editorial

A penniless con-artist named Marge Bouvier is dispatched to Italy to retrieve Seymour Skinner, a wealthy sap with no interest in coming home, and promptly falls for the life he is living. The complication is Homer Simpsley, a clingy, dim-witted freeloader parked in the middle of the arrangement. Running twenty-four minutes and pitched as animated noir, it swaps bright gags for shadow, envy and Italian lira, with lies and lust doing most of the plotting.

Animation fans who enjoy familiar faces recast in something darker will have a fine time, as will anyone partial to sun-bleached crime stories about class envy. The short runtime keeps it tight and wry, moving quickly from setup to squirm without overstaying its joke. Expect atmosphere and insinuation rather than slapstick, and a nastier streak than the character names suggest. A sharp, stylish half-hour, and an easy recommendation if the phrase animated noir made you sit up.
