Torrente for President

Spain's least self-aware former policeman is back, and time has done nothing to dent José Luis Torrente's conviction that he is a national treasure. Years have passed since his last misadventure, but the character remains the joke and the engine, a monument to bad taste ambling through a country that has moved on without him. The comedy here is deliberately unrefined, aimed squarely at anyone who enjoys watching an appalling man fail upward while remaining entirely convinced of his own heroism.

This is for viewers who already know the register and want more of it, or for the curious with a high tolerance for provocation and gags that go nowhere near good taste. Expect broad farce, crude punchlines and a pace that never pretends to be doing anything else. It plays best with an audience willing to laugh at the character rather than with him. If that is your comfort zone, this is an easy, brisk and unapologetic watch.
