Synopsis

A young woman’s hilariously confessional voicemails to her late sister are unknowingly redirected to a stranger, who begins to fall in love from afar.

Our Review Editorial

Grief and comedy share a phone line here. A young woman's unfiltered, funny, aching voicemails to her late sister go astray and land instead with a stranger, who starts falling for the voice on the other end. It is a lovely and slightly cruel premise, since the intimacy runs entirely one way, and the film seems intent on mining it for warmth rather than gimmickry. The tone promises laughs that arrive with a lump in the throat, and a romance built out of overhearing somebody's worst year.

Ideal for viewers who like romantic stories with real loss inside them and do not mind crying somewhere around the middle. Just under two hours gives the grief room to breathe between the funnier confessional stretches, so the pacing is unhurried by design. Anyone who enjoys bittersweet love stories, or characters talking themselves slowly toward healing, should settle in. Keep tissues nearby and save it for a quiet evening when you are willing to feel something.
