Long before the presidency, George Washington was a young soldier dropped into a war with global reach, and this is the version of him that has not yet hardened into a monument. Alliances fray, the fighting closes in, and the central pressure is a young man working out who deserves his trust and what kind of leader he is turning into. Two hours gives the film room for both the campaign and the character.
History buffs and viewers who like period war drama built around formation rather than triumph will get the most from it. The pace suits a deliberate build, weighting strategy, loyalty and self-doubt as heavily as the battles. Expect mud, uncertainty and a protagonist still entirely capable of getting things wrong. A strong choice for an evening when you want scale and seriousness, and a portrait of the man from before the myth took over.
