With Bowser's marriage scheme already in ruins, the threat this time comes from Bowser Jr., a son determined to spring his father and restore the family name. That sends Mario and Luigi off the ground entirely, travelling the stars with companions old and new, and the cosmic setting is the point: bigger playgrounds, stranger places, and a chance for the brothers to work as a pair rather than a solo act. The register is bright, fast and joyful, built on the momentum of platforming rather than the logic of plot.

Families are the core audience and will be well served, but so will anyone who grew up with a controller and enjoys seeing that particular vocabulary of jumps, power-ups and worlds translated to the screen. Expect colour, speed, a villain with an understandable grudge, and set pieces designed to be pointed at. It is an easy pick for a weekend afternoon with kids, and a nostalgic one for everybody else in the room.
